Occupied Gondola Cabin Falls at Kicking Horse, BC. A gondola cabin with eight passengers inside fell from the Golden Eagle Express gondola at Kicking Horse Resort March 10. The detachment occurred shortly after the cabin left the lower terminal. No injuries were reported. More.  SAM

Two unreported deaths from crashes at ski resorts in Summit County, CO, bring season total to 3 fatalities. In addition to the skier who died at Keystone Resort the week of March 10, the Summit County Coroner’s Office says there have been two other deaths resulting from crashes at local ski resorts so far this season. Skier Tragically Dies in Snow Immersion Suffocation Accident in Mt. Bachelor, Oregon. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has confirmed that a 34-year-old male from Seattle, Washington, tragically passed away at Mt. Bachelor ski resort March 17, 2025. The cause of death has not been officially determined, but according to the press release, “the circumstances are consistent with snow immersion suffocation.” More.  Powder

Man Dies after Falling from Malfunctioning Chairlift at Red Lodge Mountain, Montana. A 37-year-old man has died after falling from a chairlift that was having a mechanical problem at Red Lodge Mountain. Women Ski Jumpers Win Equal Pay for First time at First Women’s World Cup in USA. For the first time in history, a Women’s World Cup ski jumping event was held on U.S. soil, marking a major milestone for the sport. Idaho Supreme Court Reconsiders Ski Area Liability Ruling. Initially, a lower court ruled in favor of Sun Valley Resort, citing Idaho’s 1979 Ski Area Liability Act, which limits ski area operators’ liability for inherent risks of skiing. The Idaho Supreme Court reversed this decision in December 2023, stating that a jury should determine whether the resort had failed to meet the duties of ski area operators outlined in the state’s Ski Safety statute, regardless of the skier’s actions. The December 2023 ruling could lead to higher insurance costs for all ski areas. Sun Valley asked the court to rehear the case on the basis that the court failed to factor in considerations such as the duty of skiers in its original ruling.  More. SAM

Colorado Lawmakers Revive SHRED Act in Congress in an Effort to Keep Ski Area Fees Flowing Locally. Colorado congressmen are taking another shot at keeping revenue from ski area fees in the local communities where resorts operate. U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Colorado Democrat, reintroduced the Ski Hill Resources for Economic Development, or SHRED Act, for the third time. Bennet was joined by co-sponsor Sen. John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican, and several other lawmakers in bringing it to the U.S. Senate. Colorado Democratic Rep. Joe Neguse and Rep. If the results are certified by the National Labor Relations Board, the Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol Union (ABSP) will join the Communication Workers of America (CWA) 7781 United Mountain Workers, which will represent ABSP in contract negotiations with A-Basin’s new owner, Alterra Mountain Company. Hotel Fire in Turkish Ski Resort Kills at Least 66. A predawn January fire at a hotel in the Kartalkaya Ski Resort in Turkey killed at least 66, with another 51 injured, Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. Lift Detaches at Attitash, One Injured. On Feb. 2, a carrier with one rider aboard detached from the Flying Bear lift at Attitash Mountain. The carrier fell approximately 20 feet. Eyewitnesses report that the male passenger was conscious and walking after the fall. He has since been released from the hospital. More. SAM

Lift Failure Injures 15 at Spain Ski Area. A chairlift failure injured more than a dozen people Saturday morning at Astún resort in the Spanish Pyrenees. Park City Mountain Resort Ski Patrol Goes on Strike. Nearly 200 members of the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association went on strike over wages and benefits. Vail Resorts says wages have increased for ski patrollers by over 50% over the past four seasons. Indy Pass Acquires Black Mountain in New Hampshire, Plans for a Co-op Model. Indy Pass and Entabeni Systems have purchased Black Mountain from the Fichera family, who have owned and operated the ski area for the past 30 years. Indy Pass managing director and Entabeni Systems founder Erik Mogensen will serve as general manager of Black Mountain for the 2024-25 season and will transfer the ownership to a community co-op by the 2025-26 season. More. SAM

Mike Reitzell to Succeed Kelly Pawlak at Helm of NSAA.  The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has appointed Ski California president Mike Reitzell as its new president and CEO. Vail Resorts Epic Pass Sales Were Flat Through Summer.  Vail Resorts’ Epic Pass product sales through Sept. 20, 2024, for the upcoming 2024-25 North American ski season decreased approximately 3 percent in units and increased approximately 3 percent in revenue in sales compared to the prior year through Sept. 22, 2023. Epic Pass sales dollars are benefiting from an 8 percent price increase relative to the 2023-24 season, partially offset by a growing percentage of Epic Day Pass sales. More. SAM

Powdr to Sell Killington Resort / Pico Mountain, Put Mt. Bachelor, Eldora, and SilverStar Out to Bid
. POWDR has agreed to sell Killington Resort and Pico Mountain to a group of local investors. The sale is expected to close this fall. Following news of the sale, sources report that POWDR also plans to put several of its other ski resort properties—Eldora, Colo., Mt. Bachelor, Ore., and SilverStar, B.C.—out to bid. More. SAM

Alaska Airlines to Add New Nonstop Flights to World Class Ski Destinations for Winter 2025. Alaska Airlines announced over a dozen new nonstop flights from the snowy slopes to the warm waters of Mexico and Central America. More. Snowbrains

Monarch’s No Name Expansion Gets USFS Approval. Monarch Mountain has received United States Forest Service (USFS) approval for its No Name Basin terrain expansion project. #Mt. Baldy, California to Reopen After Dodging Wildfire. Mt. Baldy Resort, located near Los Angeles, California will reopen for summer operations on Saturday, July 20th, just weeks after the Vista Fire began to rage. More. Powder

Schweitzer Buys Selkirk Powder’s Sidecountry Operation. Schweitzer has acquired Selkirk Powder’s resort-based backcountry operation, which offers guided snowmobiling and cat skiing in the terrain off the backside of the resort. The outfit has operated from the summit of Schweitzer for 21 years through a long-term concession agreement with the resort and a lease from the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL). More. SAM
